In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a war raging between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other - six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. But now an ally of the Brotherhood is about to encounter his own dark desires....

This is Butchs story, of his real deep friendship with the vampires and specially with Vishous , his inner conflict not to be a part of his old family and now of the brotherhood. J. R. Ward describes that very well. But the fourth book of this series won’t be my favorite. Marissas civilized, distinguished and noble character was not appealing for me. A 300 year old, innocent, untouched virgin unsure of herself and in her behavior. At the end when she changed her thinking and acting I was a little reconciled. The lesser caused in the beginning a great threat, but …….

Arrived today, just in time for the weekend. :)
Thanks for sharing, LadyAmalie!

I agree with LadyAmalie, it's a bit lame and where the other books had steaming hot pages in between this gets only lukewarm. Don't know exactly why, maybe its all this "oh, baby..." bla.
Most beloved logic hole: V doesn't dare to touch anything with his bare hand, afraid to set fire, but puts a leather glove over it without problems. Must be Teflon-leather.
Anyway, other stories go on (John) and the Epilogue nicely explains why the O'Brien family was thrown in.
The lessers, just forget about them. I started to see them as decoration. Not much use here.

Well, actually in the end I liked this story more than I feared before reading it.

Marissa is not a character I liked very much in the other books. Well, she's still not one of my favourite characters, but it was okay.
Butch's story was kind of nice to hear about.

I have to say I've grown quite fond of J.R. Ward's style of writing.
I find it quite hard to put her books down. Even with such a not that much intriguing story as this one.

As for the lessers... Well, she could have probably done better by them.
I find those passages quite boring and often find myself just skipping through them, reading them only halfheartedly.

I've already asked penelopewanders if it's okay to send it to the same address as before, so the book will be able to travel on soon.

Thanks for the ray LadyAmalie! See you next week? :-)

The spiral continues! This arrives behind a few other rings, so it may have to sit tight here in the alps for a bit. Thanks for sending!

Journal Entry 11 by wingpenelopewanderswing at Hasliberg, Bern / Berne Switzerland on Tuesday, March 8, 2011
Here as part of a spiral. This one is Butch's story. I always need a bit of time to be able to read the more violent bits, but at some point either I become numbed or it tones down a bit.

(maybe spoiler??) I wondered why there was so much about Butch's family and then no real follow-up (aside from the visit to the mom towards the end not even recounted directly in the story). I kept expecting the Lessers to do something about it - they got his family's address in Boston, etc - but beyond visiting the station it didn't go further. Felt a bit like an unravelled thread to me, but maybe this gets picked up again in a future book.
I agree with others that Marissa is a bit unusual, but although it was a bit much at times, I found it a bit refreshing to have such an atypical heroine for this type of book. As with the contact info in Boston, I kept expecting something to backfire -for Butch to have some sort of megabattle to wage with Omega or something - but again, maybe this is still in the offing??

I quite enjoyed this one, even though I wasn't sure if I would like Marissa and Butch as a couple. Marissa did annoy me a bit sometimes, but in the end redeemed herself (what's wrong with dresses though? As if wearing pants makes you a stronger person?). And Butch is so gentle with her, very sweet. But I think I would have liked it better if Butch and Vishous got together instead.. :p Their relationship seemed much stronger and more interesting. Lots of things happened in this book, and I'm curious to see how this will develop further. I also really enjoyed reading about the other characters, especially Rhage (who is my favorite together with Vishous - now that I have seen more of him), somehow I find him very funny.. (a very big vampire eating lollypops :p). Looking forward to the next book ^_^

Thanks for book 4. Got it the other day but have been up the walls sorry for the short delay in making a JE. I look forward to cont. the series.

Journal Entry 17 by Esme-Weatherwax at Limerick, Co. Limerick Ireland on Wednesday, September 14, 2011
As I read more of the series the more I like the series. So far this would be my favorite book out of the series. I liked Butch from the 1st book and I like him in this one. I would be interested to see if in the up coming books if the lessers follow up their threat to Butch's family. I look forward to seeing where the over all series leads. I think to be honest that the reason why I like this book the best so far is b/c of the fact you already know the different characters from the previous books and as I read on in the series the characters get more developed and the over all story is more developed. I am not sure which book I would like the most as a stand alone book.

I finished this a couple of days ago, I was a little on the confused side of things as it has been so long since I've read the other books, but I soon remembered everything, and got back into the role of things.

It was nice learning everything from Butch's side of things, not only that but the twist in this is shocking, and I became really connected to Butch, and it felt like I could feel and understnad his pain.

Loved the ending and I'm excited about what may happen next, I hope to send the book off next week. Will be starting "Lover Unbound" today!
