Threads are falling once more, but far from being heroes, F'lar and Lessa are struggling to hold authoirty over the Oldtimers.

The second book in the original series takes place a few years after Dragonflight - and bringing the Weyrs forward in time isn't quite working out as planned. Whilst F'lar, Lessa and the other Dragonriders actively seek to end Threadfall forever, the Oldtimers are more fixated on keeping up outdated traditions and demanding respect from everyone else around them.

I liked this better than Dragonflight, in that it felt a little more complete and had a much rounder story. It's heartbreakingly sad in places, but there are plenty of tense moments to make the heart race as you're reading, as well as a lot of humour, quiet, romance and general day to day troubles of Weyr, Hold and Craft. The 'discovery' of technology that we find normal, is fascinating and written in a brilliant way - Fanderal's reaction to first looking through a microscope is priceless! I would have liked to find out what happened to Kylara - Lessa kind of glosses over it and you kind of hope that something more comes out of her selfish actions.
