In Horns, a dark, funny exploration of love, grief, and the nature of good and evil. Ignatius William Perrish wakes up bleary and confused after a night of drinking and "doing terrible things" to find he has grown horns. In addition to being horribly unsightly, these inflamed protuberances give Ig an equally ugly power--if he thinks hard enough, he can make people admit things (intimate, embarrassing, I-can't-believe-you-just-said-that details). This bizarre affliction is of particular use to Ig, who is still grieving over the murder of his childhood sweetheart (a grisly act the entire town, including his family, believes he committed). Horns is a wickedly fun read, and reveals Hill's uncanny knack for creating alluring characters and a riveting plot. Ig's attempts to track down the killer result in hilariously inappropriate admissions from the community, heartbreaking confessions from his own family, and of course, one hell of a showdown (Amazon)

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

This book is now on its way to Plum Crazy in the UK as a start of a bookray. It nearly didn't go as there was insufficient interest at first. It's really a great read if you're interested in this genre. I hope you'll enjoy the tea and spend the money wisely ;)

The book has arrived, thank you mrbaggins1. I'm currently halfway through a book but hope to start this in the next few days....& have a nice cup of tea while I'm reading it!
I'm so glad this ray has been able to run & I'm sure I will enjoy it as much as I did "Heart Shaped Box".

Now I just have to decide what to do with my new found wealth - never thought I'd become a billionaire :o)

Journal Entry 5 by wingPlum-crazywing at Brighouse, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, August 3, 2010
Well, what can I say? I had high hopes for this book after loving "Heart Shaped Box", so did it live up to expectations? - YES!! Once I started this book I couldn't put it down (as evidenced between the time of receiving it & this journal entry!)

A gripping read & certainly not the usual run-of-the-mill horror tale - I don't think I've ever smirked so much reading a horror novel before ( prime example: the doctor's receptionist on seeing Ig's horns for the first time:"Well, that doesn't look right" - understatement of the year, what? I can so hear her saying it!)

It reminded me of slightly of Straub & King's "The Talisman" & "Black House", then when I checked out mrbaggins1's live journal review of the book, I find that Joe Hill is Stephen King's son - spooky eh? lol!! Actually I'm glad that I "discovered" Joe Hill before I knew this fact so it didn't influence my expectations.

There's lots I would like to say about this book but I don't want to spoil things for future readers (& for those who want to know more mrb's live journal sums it up nicely), but I look forward to discussing it with you all at the end of the ray (especially about the Tree House of the Mind!)
Thanks for sharing this & I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I did :o)

Edit: forgot to say - loved all the little surprises that popped out of the book every so often! Took a couple out & put some more in :o)

Wonderful... I will definitely be looking for more of Joe Hill's written work. Horns had a little of everything, from moral tale to laugh-out-loud wit. The revelations about Ig's relationships span every emotion from hilarious to heart-breaking, and he is a very likable character, demonic or not! Plum-crazy, I want to have that discussion with you about the Tree House of the Mind!!!

The book is quirky and fun and yet thought provoking. Not exactly what I would term "horror" in the traditional sense and all the better for it.

I am so glad I signed up for this and thank mrbaggins1for including me. I loved all the surprises tucked into the pages and hope to add a little before passing it on to luckof in tomorrow's post.

Hmmm apparently when I emailed Mr Baggins to say that there would be a slight delay in reading this -- I forgot to journal that I had received it!! So sorry!! This book came with a few friends so must go see if I journalled them as well -- becoming a horrid BC'er I am afraid -- real life getting in the way of one of my few pleasures (um reading!) and they say that the mind is the first to go!-- thanks for sending Shel -- I have started it and hope to finish it by next week..

Journal Entry 12 by wingdg7500wing at Lancaster, Pennsylvania USA on Monday, January 3, 2011
Arrived safely...along with a myriad of other holiday goodies. Thank you so very much, luckof!!

I've read Hill's "20th Century Ghosts" (short stories...some good, some not so good) as well as "Heart Shaped Box" (*loved* it!!),...and have heard great things about "Horns", his newest book, so I'm really looking forward to getting started on this one very soon.

Thanks for including me in the ray, mrbaggins1. When I'm finished, I'll look for someone else who I think may enjoy it, and pass it along to continue the good karma.
