I think this book would have been more shocking if I hadn't grown up singing all the songs from Jesus Christ: Superstar.
That isn't to say I didn't enjoy the book...well, enjoy might be the wrong word. I didn't actually enjoy it. It was painful. There was too much imagery, but I think that was the point, almost. Here was Jesus, obviously human, and having to deal with being human, but also being obviously divine as well. The struggle between these two opposing forces is very accurately portrayed in the book--from people thinking he's insane to some actually accepting that he is bringing the world the Word of God.
Honestly, I prefer it when gods are portrayed as being human. It makes more sense to me that because they have assumed human bodies, they are hampered by completely ungodly things like happiness, sadness, jealousy, hate, and love.
It makes for a more interesting read than a perfect being.
