Synopsis from Amazon:-
'Margaret and Patrick, married just a few months, set off on a great adventure, a year living in Kenya. While Patrick practices medicine, Margaret works as a photojournalist, capturing a dizzying and sometimes dangerous city on film. When a British couple invites the newlyweds on a climbing expedition to the summit of Mount Kenya, they eagerly agree. But during their arduous ascent a horrific accident occurs. In its aftermath, Margaret struggles to understand what happened on the mountain and how it has transformed her and her marriage, perhaps for ever. With stunning language and striking emotional intensity, A Change in Altitude illuminates the irrevocable impact of tragedy and the elusive nature of forgiveness.'

Anita Shreve does not often disappoint and I think this is another cracker. The first half of the book describes the events leading up to the pivotal tragedy; the second half of the book deals with the fallout from that event. I liked the way Shreve describes Kenya: I often have difficulty imagining places I have not been but the poverty, heat and general chaos were well done here. I liked the characters too. It is a easy read and the rather dreamy prose sweeps you along. Very good.

I'm a new convert to Anita Shreve... I've often picked them up, but never read them.

Just recently a couple have landed on my TBR pile and I'm so glad they have!

The story was well written and drew me in from the start.... you know something is going to happen, but what? I had to keep reading to find out.

The story of the newly-weds and the impact the tragedy has on their fledgling marriage is beautifully written and heart-wrenching.. you just hope everything will be ok.
