The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
7 journalers for this copy...
What can I say, I started this book yesterday, and couldn't wait to pick it up this morning (luckily Monday is my day off!).
What to say, very different style, conversational, historical footnotes with sci-fi analogies.
The story moves between those of the different characters: Oscar, his sister Lola, her on-off boyfriend, Oscar's mum, abuela and the omni-present Dominican Republic.
This isn't the usual coming-to-America story, but there are similarities. While Oscar's family have left the island, their lives are still affected by events which happened / happen in the Dominican Republic. Oscar isn't your usual hero, overweight, unlucky in love, geek, writer, passionate, rather crazy, but you want to know his story, and I really found myself caught up in his story.
The footnotes are a great addition to the story, still given in the "real" language of the narrator, but informative.
Well-deserving of the addition to the 2010 1001 Books list.
To be added to the 1001-Library.

I liked this one. It took me a few pages to get used to the narrative style but once I did I found it to be fun and quirky. I loved all the references to Lord of the rings and Dune. Am wondering if I'm slightly nerdy myself for having got all of them though...
Thanks for starting the ring for this one Soffitta1. I've just PMd tohweiee and hope to get the book on its way very soon.

Just got it! Thanks soffitta1 for the ray, and Caroley for sending it to me. I think I should be able to get to it soon.
It took me a while to finish. Wasn't an easy read, but not entirely unenjoyable. Will try to send it off at the next weekend.
Finally travelling again. Sorry for the hold up. Enjoy, Davemurray101!

An excellent read. I suspect the inclusion of 'Oscar Wao' in the new list is to reflect a tendency in the modern novel for dysfunctional, often with ethnicity involved, family sagas. Authors like Douglas Coupland and others tend to exemplify this genre. Oscar Wao is all this but better!
