What a great audio book! I very much enjoyed the characterisation, witty dialogues, decadent 1920s setting and deliciously quirky plot. 'Murder in the Dark' is masterfully told by Stephanie Daniel, who really makes the story come alive. She is definitely one of the best narrators I've come across so far. I also liked the short introduction by the author herself, it added a nice personal touch to the audio book.

ETA: if you think the first few chapters drag on a bit, don't give up and keep listening, it's really worth it! :)

From Booklist:
Phryne Fisher, the irrepressible Australian flapper-cum-amateur-sleuth, returns for another adventure. It’s the Christmas season, and Phryne’s been invited to a big party. She doesn’t plan on attending, but when somebody starts sending her nasty letters telling her she’d better not show up, well, she’s just gotta go. Regular readers of this entertaining series won’t be surprised to learn that something bad soon happens (three people are kidnapped, to be specific), or that Phryne is soon knee-deep in mystery and mayhem. The sixteenth Fisher novel has all the qualities of its forerunners: a snazzy, jazzy, outspoken heroine; a cast of engaging supporting players; and a sharply plotted mystery. As usual, too, the author vividly creates the setting—1920s-era Melbourne—and really makes us feel as though we’ve spent some time there. Another strong entry in a consistently entertaining series.

About the Author
Kerry Greenwood is the author of more than 40 novels and six non-fiction books. Among her many honors, Ms. Greenwood has received the Ned Kelly Lifetime Achievement Award from the Crime Writers’ Association of Australia. When she is not writing she is an advocate in Magistrates’Courts for the Legal Aid Commission. She is not married, has no children and lives with a registered Wizard.

Audio Length: 8 hours and 14 min.

The audiobook has arrived safely today.

At the moment I am reading Ernest Hemmingways "The Old Man and the Sea". I hope to start with "Murder in the dark" the next days so that the audiobook will travel as soon as possible to the next participant of the ray.

Thank you, "chich", for posting and sharing.

PS: The CD works in connection with Windows Media Player fine. So there are no problems.

Journal Entry 5 by Simson-Shilitoe from Neewiller-près-Lauterbourg, Alsace France on Sunday, May 16, 2010
"Murder in the Dark" is replete with all the intricate details that make this series so successful. A mix of over-the-top characters (such as the "Golden Twins", Isabella and Gerald Templar) and down-to-earth souls (like the head housekeeper, Mrs. Truebody) together in a colorful, entertaining environment. And of course there's Phryne's mystery man of the hour, Nicholas Booth.

Still, "Murder in the Dark" is fairly typical of the series; readers who have enjoyed the earlier adventures of Phryne Fisher will be pleased with this one as well. So it is worth to look for other books of the "Phryne-Fisher-Series".

I think there is a problem at 05:20:31 with the CD. At this point the text stops abruptly, but the Media-Player and the Media-Source-Player both worked without any problems.

Will sent the CD to "hakkalina" on Monday.

Arrived safely. :) Thanks the chocolate which sweetens my day! :)

Update: 2010.05.27.
Thanks chich! The CD safely arrived! :)
Otherwise I have started to listen to it, and I found it a little bit difficult, for me the reader speaks so fast.

The truth is I was always not good at listening, on English exams it always was a nightmare to me. As enthusiastic as I was when I signed for this ray, I almost gave up to read this book after the first some minutes. BUT. I managed to remind myself, that I do bookcrossing for fun. Thus I found out that if I listen again and again the text, that helps :). I progress slowly, very slowly. I assumed I won't be able to listen the whole CD within 4 weeks :), since after a week I am around 40 minutes, and it lasts 8 hours.

Update: 2010.06.07.
I am still reading, I enjoy it so much, but I also am aware of my slowly progress, still being around 2 hours, thanks to many re-starts in order to understand it better, so I decided to move this CD on, and leave a copy for my ownself.

I am so grateful to you, chich, for sharing this CD with me, it helped me to discover my own "listening to English skill" in reality.

Decadent, indeed!
Great novel, tangled plot and quirky characters. I too thought the narration by Stephanie Daniel was excellent.
I have PMd NMReader and will get this moving again.

I also noticed a problem with the CD about 05:20:31. The sound stops, starts up again a bit further.

I apologize for it being so long from when I last started the book until now but it got mixes in with another audio book and I finally found it again.

I am up to where Phreyne has arrived at the last best party.

I plan to listen until it is complete ~ 7 hours left.

Journal Entry 21 by NMReader at Herndon, Virginia USA on Saturday, April 16, 2011
I enjoyed this book and will look for other Phryne Fisher stories.

A word of warning there were a few places where the CD skipped. I will talk to chich in a pm about this. I am out of cleaner and want to get this mailed as soon as I can. It looks like scratches vs dirty though.

Thanks for the introduction to Phryne

Journal Entry 22 by chich at Ibiza - Sant Antoni de Portmany, Illes Balears/Islas Baleares Spain on Sunday, April 17, 2011
Thanks for letting me know about the scratches NMReader. If because of this problem listening to the book becomes too much of a hassle for the next readers I will be happy to send them another copy:)

this 'book' has arrived in SLC today and I am looking forward to listening. I probably won't get a chance to start for a couple of weeks, though. I have family visiting, so I'm never alone.
