The shock of being parted from his parents and dispatched to a foster-home has affected Donovan Croft's powers of speech. The Chapmans' first glimpse of him is of a frightened little figure huddled in the back of the welfare officer's car. At first they have no idea that he is ill, and are baffled by his total refusal to speak. Landed with this strange, unresponsive foster-brother, ten-year-old Keith Chapman foresees problems ahead at home and at school. He cannot imagine his new teacher, the notorious Mr Henry, standing for any nonsense from Donovan. Nor can he be sure how the arrival of the newcomer will be taken by his own 'gang'. On the first day of the new term Keith sees that life is going to be difficult, and that he will have to choose between protecting his foster-brother and enjoying himself with his friends.
