I bought this last Saturday (6/28) at St. Peter's rummage sale in town for 75 cents. I started reading this a couple years ago through an e-mail chapter-a-day program, but never finished it and always wanted to.

Thank you! The book arrived today. Bear with me, please. I'm a teacher, and although I try to read for my own pleasure every day, usually I can only manage a few pages before falling asleep! So I might have this book awhile, but I promise it'll move again.

Journal Entry 13 by rhythmbiscuit from Northglenn, Colorado USA on Friday, October 14, 2005
Update: I continue to read this book. Now that I'm on Part Two, I am more interested. I want to learn LuLing's and Precious Auntie's stories. I had a similar experience when I read The Joy Luck Club; I was more intrigued by the Chinese mothers than the Chinese American daughters.

Journal Entry 14 by rhythmbiscuit from Northglenn, Colorado USA on Sunday, October 30, 2005
I recently finished this book. I thought it was wonderful.

I will mail this book to LoriPed.

I received this book yesterday. I have one rayback that I am currently reading, so I hope to get to this one in a week or so.

Journal Entry 17 by loriped from Keizer, Oregon USA on Wednesday, December 28, 2005
I finished this book before Christmas, but did not have time to journal it. Once again Amy Tan has written a book that tugged at my heart. I really liked reading about the relationship between mother and daughter. I could really relate to the exasperation that the daughter felt about her mother and how she wished she just wasn't so different. I will be continuing the bookray.

Journal Entry 18 by loriped from Keizer, Oregon USA on Monday, January 16, 2006

Journal Entry 20 by hak42 from Durham, New Hampshire USA on Monday, February 27, 2006
Excellent book. The middle section really dragged me in. I really like the story within a story format.

Sorry it took me so long to read! February was a much busier month than I was expecting. I'll be sending this off to Sirah tomorrow.

Journal Entry 22 by Sirah from Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, April 19, 2006
Enjoyable as the other Amy Tan´s books I´ve read. I like the combination of the modern life in the West and the past life in the East in Tan´s books. The story telling was fluent and fascinating. Recommendable easy read.

Thank you LoriPed for offering this book as a ray!

I´ve sent PM to Andthings for the address a couple of days ago.

EDIT April 28th, 2006

I have had plenty difficulties in getting PM´s and therefore I quess I couldn´t get in touch with Andthings.
Loriped adviced me to contact the next person, Breeze144 for the address. Andthings will be addedd to the end of the ring. Sorry for the inconvinience, folks!

EDIT April 29th, 2006

Breeze144 asked to be skipped.

Another amazing Amy Tan book, a mixture of old Chinese culture mixed with the modern problems of fitting in and family disputes. I could read this again and again.

Posting this to T02S03B11 today as breeze144 asked to be skipped.

I signed up for this bookring, not really even knowing what the book was about. I had never read anything by this author. I thought that it was a good book, and a very fast read. I wanted to find out what happened next. I would recommend it to someone who was wondering about reading it. Now it is on it's way once again...

I received the book today, will read as soon as possible. Thank you T02s03B11020 for mailing the book and cyber-librarian for starting the ray. Also batty14 and loriped for continuing the ray. I am sure I will enjoy reading this book.

Journal Entry 29 by Bulan-Purnama from Springfield, Oregon USA on Wednesday, January 17, 2007
Beautifully written and emotionally compelling throughout. The description of how the characters live in China before the war was quite fascinating. It was an adventure in itself.

Thanks loriped for sharing.

I decided to continue this book journey as a bookray.

The usual rules, journal after you received the book. So we know it has arrived safely. Please read the book within 60 days. My previous bookray was stalled by the first participant since August of last year. I do hope it will not happen with this one. It would be such a shame, because Amy Tan the author is an excellent writer.

For the last person on the list, you may continue its journey, RABCK, Ray It Forward, or wild release it is up to you.

Have fun reading.......

05/22/07 Thank you so much Bulan-Purnama for including me in this bookray. I have wanted to read this author for quite some time, but just never got around to her. This was one of the best books I have read in a very long time. This book was mailed this morning to Bluestocking88 to continue its journey.

I have FINALLY finished this book. It has taken me two months, a personal record. I don''t know why it was such a struggle for me, usually I am a very fast reader but I had trouble immersing myself into this one. I find Amy Tan''s books require a sense of quiet and focus that I rarely seem to achieve. I must say the farther along I got in this book, the easier it got to read and the last third of the book finally caught me and I read it quickly. I think I did not like Ruth very much at the beginning, she did not seem happy and did not take care of herself. As she developed, as did my interest in her story.

I will be mailing this out to kellyhp on Monday.
