When I first read that this was a trilogy, I thought that meant this book was the first of three volumes of a continuing story. However, this is a trilogy in one volume; sort of three books in one. Well, that's just about the format. This is a very troubling story centering on the snobbish British nobility of some years ago, when, according to the author, those people basically did nothing except entertain themselves and each other with useless - nothings. The protagonist is shown first as a young boy, physically and sexually abused by his overbearing father, who also cows his alcoholic mother. I don't want to tell the whole story and so spoil it for the reader. There are few admirable characters, but there are some, and some of those bad ones improve with time. The book is masterfully and scathingly written about that whole class of people who mostly don't really exist any more - hopefully.
