This was an interesting book. I learned about life in France during World War II. The people living in the Basque area of France, close to the Spanish border, had an easier time than the rest of France. First, it was a place where the Germans would go for some "rest and relaxation". Therefore, the Germans did not destroy the place. It was easier to hide from the Germans. The author's brother was sent to an isolated farm to hide out for the duration of the war. Her brother did get involved in the Resistance, mainly escorting people over the mountains into Spain. The title, "Stolen Years" refers to the years of adolescence that the author feels that she lost because of the war and the occupation of the Germans. She brings this up over and over again which actually becomes slightly irritating. She may have not developed socially and emotionally having missed out on the pleasures of adolescence, but there were millions who were in the same boat as her. Many people lost everything, including their lives. Nevertheless, this is a well-written boat. I learned a lot about the history of World War II as it relates to France. I had never fully understood the Vichy government before. The author might have ended up in Italy instead of the United States but her mother interferes with a young romance. Overall, a good read.
