I wouldn't have believed that a memoir of a suburban kid could be so great. Absolutely compulsively readable - quite funny and scary at the same time. I can't wait to read more of Burroughs' work.

This book is in high demand (for good reason), so I've purchased this copy to send out in a bookray (to thank everyone for being so nice following my recent recovery). For current routing list, check my bookshelf. Enjoy!

This was at the PO this morning. I'll read it in a day or so as I'm half way through a Dean Koontz book currently.

I read this book in just a little over a day. It was fast moving, kept me wondering what was going to happen next and man it made me think. It's a wonder this guy is doing what he is today....well, I won't say anymore so I don't spoil it for everyone else. :-D

Mailed out this morning (Mar 2) to LeapingLizzards in Fl. Happy reading!

Crazy! A very quick read and thoroughly enjoyable and also deeply disturbing at the same time. I am looking forward to the other opinions of the book.

This book will be going out to Ilios on Monday.

I finished this book yesterday and I have mixed feelings about it. The book is funny and the author's approach to a life of craziness, drugs, pedophilia and squalor is wonderful. However, because of my work, I have a very hard time "joking" about pedophilia (I work with sex offenders), even if I know the person making the jokes is the actual victim. Still, although I cringed through a lot of this book, I am eager to read this author following book, "Dry" - there's an excerpt.

Wow. What an interesting, wacky, fun-filled, page-turned. I could not wait to find out what happened to young Augsten. On top of all the hilarity and craziness the characters went through, I thought the most interesting thing was what happened to me, as a reader. At first, I was totally turned off by the author's style of writing - describing every fowl corner of the Finch residence. But then, just as Augsten grew accustomed to it, so did I. I found myself wondering what other disgusting thing would be lurking in the closet or on the patio table.

I was sad when it ended, not because of what happened, but because I didn't want to let go of these characters. I can't wait to read Dry, the sequel to this.

Came late last week, but I haven't had a chance to journal until now. I've got two other bookrings that arrived the week before this, so if I can't get to this book in a reasonable amount of time, I'll pass it on quickly.

Journal Entry 10 by midwinter from Tucson, Arizona USA on Monday, July 12, 2004
Hmph. That's all there is to this? I feel like I've been left hanging. I'm not quite so involved that I'd want to read the sequel, but I'm definitly glad I took the time to read this book. It reminded me of a lighter treatement of The Corrections. All the same freaky weird behaviour and disturbing plot, the same quirks and outlandish tales, but all told in a much friendlier voice. A lot of times I felt like I had to check my disbelief at the door and just let the story roll on by, but the rest of the time I couldn't wait to see what happened next.
I agree with the comment above that pedophila is a little too dark a subject for me to read w/out flinching, but it was intriguing to see things from the other side of the equation. It's very rare to read the story from the child's point of view, and even more rare to see it told in an almost casual, harmless way.

Most of this book was so over the top that it reminded me of a bizarre stream of consciousness book I read a few years ago - "My Cousin, my gastroenterologist" - the pacing was very similar, and Scissors was almost as surreal.

Interesting stuff...

Received this in the mail today. Thanks! Got a couple book rings in front of it, but I will get to it asap.

UPDATE: 10/31/2004 - Finally got to this book yesterday and I'm almost finished! It's definitely one hard to put down. It's an incredible read, but could all of this craziness really have happened? It makes for a good story anyway. Waiting for the okay from mysteryfan03 and then it will be on its way (since I'll finish the book today).

Mailed 11/9/04.

Received this book in the mail last night! Thanks! I do have a few rings in front of it..

Wow! I agree with others that this is almost surreal. It is hard to imagine this happening, but on the other hand, I have been in much more disgusting homes in my job. The attitudes and beliefs of everyone are unreal too, how easy it is to use power to pull everyone else into your delusions. I also would like to read Dry.
Thank you grover3d for sharing this book with us.

This one has arrived at my Australia address. I had thought it would arrive before I moved over to the UK, but not to be. It will be sent over to me now (aren't mum's great!?), and I'll place it on my TBR list now so it's turn will be up when it arrives with me in person!

What a frightening story, a frightening upbring, and a frightening Doctor!! They are all completely bonkers!!! Let along any actual diagnosis that could be assigned, properly.

I was stunned and appaulled - and yet couldn't look away! Like a train wreak, this book is addictive. But I think only to see how it would end. It's all very bizarre, and the most scary of all is that it is a memoir!!!

The comments from reviewers on the front are mortifying, once you start reading the actual book.

An....interesting read!

Will send on when I have an address....

Journal Entry 16 by spaceystacey from Bridgeton, New Jersey USA on Monday, August 15, 2005
Arrived at my door step today from the UK. Will be reading shortly and sending on its way.

I am so sorry to all of those after me on this bookring. This is another book that had been placed in a room in my home that we have not been using for over a year(since my husband passed away in April 05). I just now found it and read it today(7/24/06). Captivating memoir of a young boy whose world falls apart. He looks at this with very interesting eyes.

7/28/06 I have tried to contact the next 4 people:
1. kbgoffe - Beaverton, OR (did hear back from her from her alternative email address, she has asked to be skipped)
2. goygrrl - Woodland Hills, CA,
3. jamieh2003 - Wiley Ford, WV,
4. emitchell1017 - Peterborough, NH after me but so far no one has responded to the pm's.

I have contacted RlyLv2Rd today as she would be the next one. I sent the book out to her on 7/29/06, it came back to me today(7/31/06) as the 3 cent stamp had come off. The next reader is beloved49 who used to be known as seekmyface, which is the name on the list. I had contacted her and Rlylv2rd together so that I was assured of having someone to pass the book onto this week.

I gotta say, I loved this book. Despite the very sad and realistic trama that propelled this man's early beginnings, I find his views and observations frank and astute. When you read these stories, and you realize the magnitude of living some people endure in such a short time, you realize the true beauty of someone being able to move past a terrifying beginning to make tremendous strides within themselves and others. I think Augusten is clever, creative, and hysterically funny despite some horrible life experiences. This book both shocked me and had me laughing so hard I cried. Thanks so much for sharing it, I am glad it was recommended to me!!!
