This family drama takes place in Wisconsin from 1919 to 1941. Drowning Ruth tells the story of two sisters (Mathilda who gets married and settles on the family farm and Amanda who goes to the city and becomes a nurse) and Ruth. The sisters are living together with Mathilda's daughter Ruth while her husband in serving in WWI. Mathilda drowns under mysterious circumstances and Amanda raises Ruth. The story of what happened to Mathilda is told over the course of Ruth's growing up.
