Loved it! My second by Cathy Kelly (the other was the more recent "Homecoming"). Kelly has a way of making the characters very real and sympathetic. I like books like this, that take place on one street and we meet all the neighbors and learn about their lives and problems - and secrets. Seems the past always influences the present in some way, no matter how much we try to keep it away, and even if we don't always realize it.
What is it about contemporary Irish authors that gives them such a deep understanding of human nature? I find this in Maeve Binchy's books and another writer I just discovered, Sheila O'Flanagan. Wonderful!
