Arrived in Seattle in Kalman's memory bookbox. Will I read it? Sure, why not.

Journal Entry 4 by BooksandMusic at Seattle, Washington USA on Monday, April 11, 2011
I don't think I've ever read a book set in a small English village that didn't turn up a dead body and have a detective inspector just happening to be vacationing there or something. So I kept waiting for the dead body even though this is not a murder mystery. Imagine my surprise when this actually happened. But it wasn't a murder, it was a tragedy. Not my kind of book already. This is basically a romantic but clean, old-fashioned kind of family saga.
And it goes on and on and on and on..... I kept thinking how many more pages and who cares??
One of the things that bothered me about this book, besides how boring it was, was that all the characters have the same voice. The author is not very good at giving people different voices. The all say "shall" and "shan't" (have you EVER heard shan't used out loud? Maybe in England or Scotland they are used. America? Never. I hear shall sometimes, among the old or well-educated. But shan't? Every character of every age uses these words in this book. In other words, each character speaks like the author. I ended up feeling like I spent hours listening to this author talk to herself.
Also some messed up time stuff. Like they use "mobiles" but everyone is hanging their laundry (in the sub-zero temperatures) out to dry. Also, the T.V. (it mentioned that it is COLOR!) has an internal antennae, you can just turn the knobs to adjust reception, color and all that. What? Isn't that the 1970's or before? Right after "bunny ears" for reception? I am unfamiliar with rural Scotland but I would imagine that they have electric dryers and computers and cable if they have mobiles.

I don't remember the story well - I just remember reading it on a flight to California. Love oliviapoolside's candid review :)
