Harenberg 1000

Synopsis:
Set during the Depression in the depleted farmlands surrounding Augusta, Georgia, this is the story of the Lesters, a family of destitute white sharecroppers. Debased by their poverty, they fear they will descend to a lower rung on the social ladder than the black families who live near them.

It's one of the sadest books I've read the last years. The language and the many repeatements open even a new dimension of sadness. It is sort of a collection of failure - in a beautiful language. When you read the book, you feel sad - but you also feel all the rest: wind, speed, heat and cold, you smell the earth and hear the horn. Impressing

Read it for the BergABbauchallenge 2010 in March - because the book is yellow. Obviously very yellow.

Wow, that was kind of a weird reading.... as Wasserfall already sad, lots of sadness, lots of sentences which are repeated.

I read grapes of wrath some weeks ago, same period, similar story. But totally different in the way the people are acting and described.

Most impressive - the handling of the car and the “gone” children.

End was fitting :-)

Reserved for one of the other challenge readers.

PS: also read for the Bergabbau challenge - 10 years later :-o

Das Buch kam per Päckchen bei mir an. Vielen Dank dafür!
The layout looks like self-published, but I can't imagine that that's true.
