cover:
30-something woman seeks like-minded women for friendship and socialising. Must have experience with small children, stroppy teenagers, perfect wives (deceased) and new relationships. GSOH vital. Fed up with unfair portrayal as 'wicked'.

Eve, Clare, Melanie, Lily and Mandy are five very different women, all with one thing in common - they all find themselves in a less-than-conventional family set-up. Thrown together by a chance encounter, they quickly form themselves into an unofficial mutual support group, talking and laughing through the ups and downs of 21st-century family life. As a cup of coffee turns into a bottle of wine, their get-togethers soon become a regular fixture. But the friendships between the women are tested to the max when they're forced to confront new futures as well as unwelcome figures from the past...

I enjoyed this a lot despite a few glaring problems, & would probably read it again some time. It is amusing and serious.

The biggest problem is the dearth of Stepmothers' Support Group get-togethers, and there's very little about how they supported each other, or if they did any supporting at all. I think we're meant to assume that they did from the epilogue because there's not much written explicitly. Fair enough, the story is all about Eve, but the title suggests stepmothers, plural not single.

Mandy is the second item I have trouble with. Why was she brought in at all? She's a cardboard cutout, introduced late in the piece, & all of a sudden, with no support at all, she's completely revamped her life. It's a pity there's no such thing as an editor any more.

Lastly, Ian was being an inconsiderate pig. Whether Eve had something in her past that drove her to action or not, he was still being a bastard. I fail to see why Eve had to justify her actions any further. She might have discussed it further but, as Ian had already stated his position with no possibility of changing his mind, there didn't seem to be any point.

As I said, there are problems but it's definitely worth reading.
