From the dust cover:
In 1954, in the cookhouse of a logging and sawmill settlement in northern New Hampshire, an anxious twelve-year-old boy mistakes the local constable's girlfriend for a bear. Both the twelve-year-old and his father become fugitives - forced to run from Coos County, to Boston, to southern Vermont, to Toronto - pursued by the implacable constable. Their lone protector is a fiercely libertarian logger, once a river driver, who befriends them.

I just recently finished reading this book. I got it originally because it was written by the same author who wrote "A Prayer For Owen Meany', one of my all-time favourite books. This one did not disappoint! It is as well written, and the story held my interest through to the end. It spans several decades but goes back and forth throughout the years while telling the story. It's still easy to follow. Highly recommended.
This will be given to my sister and nieces to read so is not available.
