Bought this book because on the cover, The Guardian is quoted as saying this book "Makes the Vagina Monologues sound tame....[and] is both shocking and funny."
WOW. I'm not even sure what to say about this one. At times both horribly disturbing and yet utterly fascinating, Wetlands is, to say the last, immensely provocative. And the story, simple as it may be, is not only compelling, but also darkly humorous while at the same time somewhat tragic.
On more than a few occasions, the passages of Helen's inner thoughts were so vividly descriptive of things we never talk about that I almost had to put the book down for good, yet something kept me riveted and wanting to find out more. Like the old adage, the story is like a train wreck -- you feel you should turn away but you simply cannot bring yourself to do so. At the same time, Wetlands may also very well be a feminist manifesto: despite Helen's being slightly less than fully mentally stable, her lack of shame when it comes to all things related to the female form is laudable.
Or, like the LA Times says, "A slimy swim, but one worth taking."
