Thank you for this one - I've heard lots of good things about it and look forward to reading it. I appreciate your generosity. I know how difficult it is to care for a loved one with a chronic health condition. Please know that you and your mother will be in my thoughts and prayers.
This novel is spare in story - it is simply a man and his child in the post-apocalyptic world trying to survive, moving south. It is also complex and very moving. The story is at turns horrifying and uplifting. It comes to a conclusion that is at least in part inevitable and yet McCarthy manages to leave the reader with a sense of the indomitable nature of the human spirit. I thought that this book lived up to much of its hype (I usually avoid these books for sometime because many times I feel let down by all the buzz and publicity).
A quote to remember:
The one thing I can tell you is that you wont survive for yourself. I know because I would never have come this far. A person who had no one would be well advised to cobble together some passable ghost. Breathe it into being and coax it along with words of love. Offer it each phantom crumb and shield it from harm with your body.
