Doomsday Book

Paperback, 578 pages.
From the back cover:
For Kivrin, preparing for on-site study of one of the deadliest eras in humanity's history was a simple as receiving inoculations against the diseases of the fourteenth century and inventing an alibi for a woman travelling alone. For her instructors in the twenty-first century, it meant painstaking calculations and careful monitoring of the rendezvous location where Kivrin would be retrieved.
But a crisis strangely linking past and future strands Kivrin in a bygone age as her fellows try desperately to rescue her. In a time of superstition and fear, Kivrin - barely of age herself - finds she has become an unlikely angel of hope during one of history's darkest hours.
Five years in the writing by one of science fiction's most honoured authors, Doomsday Book is a storytelling triumph. Connie Willis draws upon her understanding of the universalities of human nature to explore the ageless issues of evil, suffering, and the indomitable will of the human spirit.

Just openend my Secret Santa Pres - and am VERY EXCITED!! Thanks so much, briz-cowgirl - I've wanted to read 'Doomsday Book' even since I read 'To Say Nothing of the Dog', probably a year or two ago. Can't wait to read it!!
(PS: Despite what it says on the time stamp - it is Xmas Day here now :-)

Wow. This was well worth waiting for. Connie Willis has put together an awesome story, seamlessy combining science fiction and historical events. I have no idea how accurate the medieval component of the story is, but I feel know I more about the plague than I ever did before. Most importantly this story has some beautifully rendered characters. Without wanting give away any spoilers, I *cried* at the end and I wasn't expecting that.
I'm going to try and persuade my (non-bookcrossing) boyfriend to read this next, and then try and find someone else who will appreciate it after that. Thanks again to briz-cowgirl for sending!!
