I'm so glad I picked this book up - I loved it.

It's not the easiest read as it is full of pop-culture references, footnotes and Spanish phrases. (I found a site that had annotated notes to help with that. http://www.annotated-oscar-wao.com/index.html). But don't be put off by that, even if you don't understand the Spanish, you can usually get the gist.

Ultimately, this is a great multi-generational saga about an immigrant family from the Dominican Republic, that is funny one minute and heart-breaking the next.

I'm going to see if a friend wants to borrow this before I release it.

Wow, wow, wow! The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is awesome. The narrator’s mind blowing energetic voice astounded me with its liveliness. The fast pace of book, combined with the intertwining stories of crazy cast of characters kept me engrossed in this novel way past my bedtime!

This book was unique in the way it was written. Thankfully, when the author used slang Spanish, I remembered the bits I had learned at college to figure out what the author was trying to say, although it would have been pretty easy to understand anyway due to manner in which the language was used.

I enjoyed all the references to fantasy, which probably makes me a nerd, but who cares? This was a really refreshing read and unlike anything I have ever read before. I would recommend this book to everyone because it is so unusual.

P.S. Who knew footnotes could be so funny?

P.P.S. I hope there is more to come from this author!
