Thank you, booklady! I have not read this one and it looks good.
Different cover than shown...
This book was written in the late 80s and some of it holds up and some does not.
The writing is mostly fine - NR is good at her craft and knows how to plot and set up interesting characters and move them forward. But...there are several reasons why this one fell flat for me:
✅ The "hero" - this was probably the major issue for me. So it's obvious if you read many of NR's books that she *loves* the Thief with a Heart of Gold. Phillip's childhood was a struggle and he eventually became a notorious jewel thief. Before he was caught, he made a deal with British police to become a consultant, essentially going to the other side. This was a great set up for him. However, when he encounters Princess Adrianne, he becomes a bit too stalker-ish. He won't take no for an answer - because obviously (eye roll) *he* knows what she needs. Even though it's written before #metoo era, it's just a bit much for me.
✅ The proof reading - come on. This book was written in the late 80s and re-issued in the late 90s and the late 00s...and NO ONE fixed the obvious misspells (Carrier for Cartier; short for snort; routed for rooted; rout for root). Some of these were hilarious (...began to rout in the refrigerator...) but it's not acceptable in a work that's been out for so long.
✅ Finally, the action upon Princess Adrianne's return to Jaquir was too abrupt and just came off as too easy. It was a rushed ending and it shows.
But I did like the strong heroine who holds her own. Adrianne was accomplished as well as beautiful. Her thefts were made originally to support her mother and then became a way to hone her craft for her eventual aim of recovering her mother's "bride price" - the fabulous Sun & Moon necklace.
Even though her standalone novels are usually good, this just was not a favorite novel from NR. If you can get past the arrogant hero, you'll probably like it.
Quote I liked:
...there comes a time when you have to be enough for yourself.
