I wanted to start my BookCrossing list with something exceptional and this fit the bill just right. If you have a fundamentally cynical disposition and an urge to insult people while preserving the best of social niceties then this book makes an excellent introduction. It reminds me strongly of Oscar Wilde, distilled and filtered.
It is also eminently quotable. Here are a couple culled from only 5 minutes skimming:
"There was once (said Reginald) a woman who told the truth. Not all at once of course, but the habit grew upon her gradually, like lichen on an otherwise healthy tree."
"Of course she has to send out for her afflictions, like those restaurants where they haven't got a licence.
I have to dock it a point for being mysogenistic, however it is subtle and amusing enough that I was able to overlook it, and even his dislike of women stands as a symptom of his times rather than an indication of general unhealthiness.
