'Heather McGowan's story of Catrine Evans, an unsettled schoolgirl in an unfamiliar environment, attracted considerable acclaim on publication. In "Schooling" Catrine's memories of a life she left behind in the States assemble as a chorus rich in texture and breathtaking in linguistic ambition. The story that emerges is one of the most powerful, beautiful and disquieting first novels of recent years.'

This one is definitely 'novel' - unusual in style and brilliantly written. I loved it!

Hand delivered to lakelady2282 this evening. Enjoy. X
Thank you for dropping the book in Cat. I'm sure things will start to move again soon.
Just had a quick look at this and although intriguing - it is beyond me at the moment. It's going to take a while, I think, before I get back to my usual reading material.
Picked up at the bookcrossing meeting this morning. thanks to lakelady2282 for passing it on and Cat207 for organising this bookring.
I finished this one last night. I kept wondering if Heather McGowan wrote this novel from the perspective of someone with ADD? anyway I'm not sure I took it all in, so this one is going on my list of re-reads in future. PMing Miss-Owl to confirm address.

I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed this read, mainly due to its 1920s-reminiscent James Joycean-Virginia-Woolf stream-of- consciousness style. (Which, incidentally, if you take as evidence the sentence I just wrote, appears to be contagious.) I loved how McGowan's prose skimmed all so fluidly, between characters, time frames, perspectives, and the vivid sense of visual impressionism throughout, as alternately clear and obscure as a painting. Confusing at times, certainly, but what else about life, at times, isn't? The liquidity of style matches the ambiguity of right and wrong, truth and lies, the borderlines at which the novel equivocates, beautifully.
This was a book that I wanted to pick up and read all over again as soon as it was over, but alas for me (or not), it's a bookring!
Many, many thanks to cat207 for sharing. I have the next reader's address & I'll send it off once Thai public holidays will cooperate.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Apologies for the delay, everyone. By the time the Thai public holidays were cooperating, we had a bit of curfews & warnings & shopping centre closures due to the anti-government riots.
Anyway, the book is now on its way to the Netherlands.

I just realised I did not journal the book when I received it :-( really sorry for that.
In the meantime, I have just finished reading it. I must say that it took me forever to get into it and felt very confused by the changes in point of view, the way the sentences were written,... Many things.
Nevertheless, I am happy that I kept on reading cos in the end I liked the book!
Thanks cat207 for sharing!
I will PM the next in line in order to post the book very soon.

I'm sorry for the delay in reading this but I've been putting it off after reading on the back that it was written in the style of stream of consciousness. The last one I read like that was The Waves by Virginia Woolf and I thought that was pretty dire. So, I wasn't keen to make a start on this one.
It was a bookring however, so a start had to be made and actually, once I'd got going on it, it wasn't as bad as I expected. I could at least tell what was going on and once I'd got used to it, I started to almost enjoy it. The bit in the middle was rather odd and I wasn't keen on that but then it settled down again. When it got to the end though, I was left with not much idea what was going on. It just got a bit too incoherent.
At least it was a lot more readable than The Waves, and it's another one ticked off the list.
Thanks for starting the ring Cat. I've PMd Debnance and received a reply so the book will carry on travelling in a couple of days.
