Product Description
The soldier returns from the front to the three women who love him. His wife, Kitty, with her cold, moonlight beauty, and his devoted cousin Jenny wait in their exquisite home on the crest of the Harrow-weald. Margaret Allington, his first and long-forgotten love, is nearby in the dreary suburb of Wealdstone. But the soldier is shell-shocked and can only remember the Margaret he loved fifteen years before, when he was a young man and she an inn-keeper's daughter. His cousin he remembers only as a childhood playmate; his wife he remembers not at all. The women have a choice - to leave him where he wishes to be, or to 'cure' him. It is Margaret who reveals a love so great that she can make the final sacrifice.

Wasn't going to take any books away, but this has large writing and is very short!

I picked this up at the Urban Coffee Company in Birmingham today, and read it on the way back to York on the train this afternoon. I picked it out because it's short, and it's virago - both big ticks!

I enjoyed it. It's written in a very evocative way. From the perfection of the stately home at the beginning, to the manner in which Chris walks back across the lawn on the final page ("every inch a soldier"), I was right there feeling it. It's all about duty and class, which is so very different now to how it was 93 years ago, but it still feels relevant. The narrative devices of memory loss and lost letters seem a bit tired now, but presumably they were less so back then. It's good.

I guess I'll offer it to Nu-Knees next.

Thank you very much, tree-hugger. I look forward to reading this. It has everything going for it that you identified, plus I've read and enjoyed a book by this author previously. You can find my comments, such as they are, here: The Fountain Overflows.

I don't know why I read this book within about 24 hours of being given it. I just did! I have over a hundred books hanging around the house waiting to be read, yet this one overtook them all, demanding to be read at once. And I'm very pleased I did. It's only short, around 180 pages of clear, black print, yet it's packed with atmosphere and meaning. It has a lot to say about love and duty and passion and class and what was seen as appropriate and what wasn't and ....
Thank you, tree-hugger and all previous owners, for the chance to read something special which I might otherwise have missed.
