I finished reading the book last night. I found myself amazed, once again, by the power that can be conveyed by graphic novels. I have read only a handful, first having to overcome my snobbish belief that they were glorified comic books. This graphic novel, like some of the others I have read is a far cry from the things we'd pick up for 10 cents at the store as kids. There is a real power in the starkness of the art, and the brevity that the medium allows. The story is told powerfully and without any extra adjectives.
I need some time to digest all the information. It's a different view from the one many of us know. I was in graduate school with several women from Iran at the time of this story, and I am trying to mesh their views, the views of Iranian friends in my life to day, what we were seeing here in the US at the time, and what Satrapi presents in this novel into one blend.
I would be interested to see how a director portrays the story as well. And I am interested in finding out what happens next in Satrapi's life and that of her family.
