Seek and ye shall find, as somebody probably once said! Thanks to the Oxfam bookshop in Ipswich for fulfilling this wish :)

Ah, what a sublime writer Coupland can be! This is right up there with ‘Girlfriend in a Coma’…and I’m only about half-way through his still-growing back catalogue. There are a lot of familiar themes here, the shallow hip post-everything Californians, large landscapes and large themses, a sense of ennui, of endings and lost opportunities.

This story revolves around 2 broken characters, failed actors, drifters, the only children of eccentric mothers. Both John Johnson and Susan Colgate have strange missing years, not quite finding themselves, but were destined to meet each other…albeit briefly early in the book. The majority of the rest of the book cuts between each of their life stories, and a present day mysterious disappearance and chase. I know Coupland can write a killer one-liner, and can measure the pulse of the X (and Y) generation like nobody else, but I don’t remember quite just an assured structure, pace, and gentle comic touch.

Mr C, I’m loving your work and looking forward to the next one :-)
