Another book to feed my recently developed Paul Auster habit. Accquired from the Amorous Cat bookshelves on Lark Lane, Liverpool on a brief visit home for the weekend - you gotta love those bank holidays! Check out their stock at www.amcat.supanet.com and support a local small business! Will read and release at some point.

I am on a real Paul Auster kick at the moment - I'm on my third book by him this month. I really enjoyed this book but probably not quite as much as I enjoyed the suspense of The Music of Chance. This book contains a lot of symbolism and duality and there is a synchronisty between a lot of his stories. Fogg , Effing and Barber all try at some point to reduce their lives to the most distilled essence possible. Fogg, by relinquishing all of his possessions and becoming homeless, Effing by renouncing his past and creating a new one for himself and then later by distributing his wealth and Barber does a similar thing by relinquishing his home. All of the people in this book were seeking something and in each of their stories they seem to believe that by peeling off all the outer trappings of possession and wealth will they expose the core of themselves to world. Ultimately making themselves as vulnerable as possible leads to their undoing either physically or emotionally. All in all a very satisfying novel from Mr Auster.
This book is now waiting to head out on a bookray.

A great story which weaves the lives of the characters nicely together. This is the first Paul Auster book I have ever read. I will definitely be reading more.
Will PM next in line.

I really enjoyed this book, it's a great read. The three different journeys are woven together really well and the conections very believable.
I thought the views & experiences of fatherhood of the three main characters was also a good theme.

Off to Caroley in the post today.

Journal Entry 14 by Caroley at Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Monday, February 14, 2011
Received on Saturday, but haven't had a chance to journal its receipt up until now I'm afraid as I've been unwell. I have read it though ;)

I think this is my fifth Auster? And so far I've enjoyed them all. I did like the more hopeful ending of this one, compared to at least one of the others. I liked all the coincidence and chance in the book. There were so many themes to consider when reading this but that stood out for me. That and the fine storytelling.

I liked Kitty. I just thought I'd mention that.

Thanks once again to Shovelmonkey1 for sharing your Austers with us. I've PMd Sintra and will hopefully get the book on its way again asap.

Edit on 06/03/11 - I haven't heard back from Sintra yet so have emailed using address on profile page.

I really enjoyed this book - it's definitely one of my favourite novels by Paul Auster so far. Like other readers before me in this bookring I liked the symbolism and the parallels that run through the entire novel. Very impressive storytelling.

Thanks a lot for sharing this book! It will be on the way to the UK soon.

Book arrived safe and sound, will start as soon as I can, thanks for sharing xx

22 May 11 - sorry for delay, I went away for a couple of weeks and only wanted to take books I could leave there. If I was to describe an Auster plot to someone they would sound a bit far fetched or not particularly interesting, yet they are great reads that keep you turning the page with no idea where it is going next. The Music of Chance is still my favourite so far but very pleased to have the opportunity to tick another off the list. I have the address of the next peson so will pop it in the post this week.

Many thanks to shovelmonkey1 for the opportunity to read another book by Paul Auster. I really like his writing style and enjoyed this book. One of the better 1001BTRBYD.

I have an address for danielle23 so will get this book in the post tomorrow.

Journal Entry 22 by Danielle23 at Sunderland, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Wednesday, June 29, 2011
The book has arrived safely with some amazing gifts, thank you so much Alison (the bookmark is my new favourite!). I'm looking forward to reading this book after reading the reviews. I'm partway through another Auster at the moment, 'The Music of Chance', so I will get to this soon xx

Journal Entry 23 by Danielle23 at Sunderland, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Monday, July 11, 2011
I really enjoyed this book! I liked all of the characters, especially Effing, he made me laugh so many times. The book was well thought and well written. I was surprised by many of the main twists which is just how I like it (I hate being able to guess where a book is headed).

This book finished nicely too; all loose ends tied up and a clean cut ending. I think this has been my favourite Auster. Thanks again for sharing Caz and I'll try to get this travelling soon xx

I love Paul Auster. As bizarre as his coincidences are, he makes them perfectly believable.

As this is the end of the bookray and I'm leaving my temporary home tomorrow and flying south with only carry on luggage, I'll leave this book on the bookshelf at the Quest Apartments. Hopefully it will find a worthy reader.

Thanks again shovelmonkey1 for sharing your books.
