Gave in to temptation when tidying the bookshelf in coffee#1 today.
Even though this story was written several hundred years ago, it remains so very relevant. The Robinson family are working class and very happy with their lives. When Mrs Dolly come to live with them and insists that they buy a lottery ticket, they win a fortune but it does not result in happiness. Many people think that if they were rich they would enjoy a life of idleness, this is not so. I think that Maurices decline was because without a sense of purpose people cannot feel fulfilled and make stupid decisions. How fortunate he was to have the wife that he did.

I agree, definitely one for the modern age! This story could so easily be set in 21st century Britain and it's quite a surprise that's it's 200 years old because it's written in a very fluid way with little attention to it's historical context. It does make you wonder when people talk of modern-day ills in society that we are merely repeating our forebears' follies...history teaches us that this human condition is something we just have to deal with...some days we have a little victory and can go to bed with a clear conscience, on others it's a bit of a battle but we should continue to strive to be a better person..where we don't think about the consequences is when we start to fall apart...Maurice managed to claw his way back thankfully albeit with the insight and support of his wife.
A little gem of a book...great choice for a RABCK..thank you

Received in the mail Thursday along with Flat Stanley. Thanks for the RABCK!
As stated by previous journalers, this story is timeless. Winning a large sum of money isn't always a "blessing". It often changes a person's life for the worst. You can't buy happiness.

"Money cannot buy you happiness" is the theme of this book. Although written a couple of hundred years ago, the story is quite relevant today. This was an enjoyable quick read with a lesson for all generations.
