The Colour took a while to kick off and hold my interest but I found that it is one of those books that got better towards the end. The parts relating to Joseph were a bit of a drag as I did not care for him and his character only got worse. My favourite character was Harriet as she changed from being weak into a strong and independent woman. I am glad she cut her ties with Joseph because she definitely deserved her happy ending, although it was a shame it was not with Pao Li, the ‘connoisseur of love.’ The plot was unpredictable and the setting and ideas Tremain wrote of are unusual enough to make this a book worth persevering with.
