Another brilliant book by Ishiguro. The style is very formal, detached, understating - a very peculiar tone of voice, that matches the protagonist and first-person narrator, great use of language. Somehow, I often found it a bit annoying, but at the same time couldn’t put it down. The plot is well structured, getting deeper and deeper, with a surprising climax. There seems to be some kind of a theme that runs through Ishiguro’s novels like a thread – how do we handle the role that life has put upon us… (especially when we find out what it is all about.) Recommendable.

THANKS FOR THE PRESSIE. Sorry - couldn't wait until Christmas - just had to open to those beautifully wrapped parcels to see what was inside. Thanks for the labels as well - they always come in handy.

This book keeps you mildly disorientated throughout - you're never quite sure where you are or what is going on - events are referred to as if you should know exactly what they are - the 'historical' facts don't seem quite right - the hero is definitely not a reliable narrator. And yet, you can't help but enjoy the sense of dislocation as you read. Christopher is a very troubled character - completely influenced by the disappearance of his parents, even though he seems to deny this. His own view of the world is completely skewed and you spend much of the story not quite believing what he is relating. Conversely, when what happens to his parents is finally revealed, I started to think there was more to his conspiracy type theories, even as he gave them up.

An excellent read.
