"Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens ..."

RABCK release to Pennsylvania. Wish I could count it as a release challenge, specifically the 2009 Movie Books Release Challenge, but it's a RABCK and not a wild release. Sigh. I think I'll still post it there just for the sake of saying I found something that matched one of the challenges.

Thank you, SeeLifeMarvels, for this book from my wishlist! Would you believe I was thisclose to ordering it from paperbackswap.com earlier today? I am hooked on Showtime's "The Tudors," without the benefit of actually having Showtime, so this will be a great surrogate while I patiently wait for season 3 to come out on DVD. Your kindness and generosity are greatly appreciated.

I am starting this today, while I patiently wait for Blockbuster to deliver Disc 2 of Season 3 of The Tudors. I'm betting that I will be done reading this before the DVD arrives. This book should provide a much-needed escape from the continuous onslaught of snow that is plaguing my part of the world!

I must confess I was up until 3 a.m. finishing this engaging and incredibly detailed historical romance; in my 20s, I read this genre almost exclusively, so it was nice reunion for us. I seem to be reading a lot of fictionalized history lately. It's interesting to have the broad brush strokes of bland dates and facts filled in with color and sound and life. It was a wonderful escape from the bad weather, and I finished it with perfect timing: at last, there is sunshine in the forecast today!

The Other Boleyn Girl is a book about the world inside Hampton Court and the politics that shaped the time. I didn’t realize that this was book 2. I would have read book one first. Gregory makes these characters come alive. Gregory makes the reader understand how difficult it was to live as a woman in the early 1500s. Mary was especially well crafted. At 13 years old she went from her forced marriage to being thrown into the King's arms as his mistress. The inner struggles she fought between being true to herself and her heart were poignant.

Anne Boleyn, the most famous and tragically terminated sister, is portrayed in such a poisonous way. She would stop at nothing to get what she wanted. In the end it killed her. But her character, as portrayed by Ms. Gregory, was compelling and convincingly ugly, despite her beauty.

King Henry VIII also jumped off the pages. He came off as a spoiled brat, even as he grew older, who always got what he wanted. He and Anne were well matched for each other.

Ms. Gregory chose will as having Mary as the narrator of this book. It helped the scheming nature of Anne to come alive. The relationship amongst the Boleyn siblings was interesting and probably true for the era. .

This book is a page turner.. I learned a great deal about the monarchy of Henry VII as well as life in the court during that time period. At the same time, I found myself entertained and saddened as I was reminded of the sad plight of women in those days.
