The name of this book should be changed since Nathaniel only starts really being mentioned a 100 pages in and then died not long after.

It was an interesting book. I've never really thought about the Spice trade much before. The English did not have a very good relationship with the Dutch for years. I don't know why but I used to only think England had problems with France and Spain back in the olden days.

I loved that we exchanged a small island for New York. Bet the Dutch were a bit gutted after what New York turned out to be!

As with any History book it can be a bit heavy going at times with lots of names and dates. And why I won't say this book was amazingly enjoyable or a book I couldn't put down, it's certainly worth a read and I'm glad I've had my knowledge expanded :)

I'm going to save this book for one of the many sweepstakes I've got coming up.

Well, what to say about this book... It was at the same time intriguing and appalling. I don't really understand the title of the book as I disagree about the importance of Nathaniel Courthope's role in the events. I think he was just a pawn among many, many others. England and Holland fighting over something that is not theirs to fight for in the first place.

A very interesting book about the spice race and the beginnings of colonialism, or rather: the brutal exploitation of the Global South. I often wondered what the Portuguese point of view would have been like. Or the Bandanese! Or what would have happened if women had equal rights... They do not matter here, except Elisabeth I. An autobiography of William Hawkins' Indian wife would be interesting to read.
