From the back cover:

Lila doesn't remember the sun. Born with a rare and dangerous allergy to sunlight, she's spent her life hidden from the daylight--staying covered up and indoors until dark, only venturing outside after the sun has set and the moon's cool light shines. Almost every night, she is visited by two young girls who wear tutus over their jeans and costume fairy wings, and the three of them dance and tell wonderful stories. But while Lila adores her family and her new friends, she still longs to feel the sun's touch. Lila's mysterious friends have promised to help her...but how?

Late last week, my mother had an appointment with an out-of-town doctor. She’s terrible with directions, so she asked me to tag along to make sure she didn’t get lost. While we were there, we decided to go shopping. (Browsing, really.) We found an Ollie’s, and managed to get lost for an hour or three, anyway. They had so many books!

Even though most of the books I found were only a dollar a piece, I managed to control myself and walked out with just three. (Read it again slowly, I’m not fibbing.) One of them was A Cool Moonlight.

Lila, the main character, has a rare genetic condition that forces her to stay out of the sunlight. The story is about Lila, her friends, and a promise they make to help her see the sun again. I suppose the book caught my interest for a few reasons. First, I'll shamelessly admit that I'm a fan of YA Lit. I’m curious how such a unique topic will play out in a children’s book. Second, I’ll fill you in on the fact that I'm in college, and I'm currently studying genetics. So I thought it was a cool coincidence that I found this book just now. And finally, I'm an artist, and the book has a really pretty cover. (Sue me.)

I suppose that if it’s terrible, it’ll only take me a few minutes to finish it; it’s just over 130 pages long.

Wow. I didn’t expect that to be so haunting. The author dreamed up a very convincing young girl, and though the writing was choppy in places, the way the girl described things was stunning in both its simplicity and its beauty.

I’m hesitant to say more for fear of spoiling the book for whoever might be reading this, but I really enjoyed reading this book.

I haven't yet decided what I want to do with this one, so I'm going to mark it "reserved" until I figure that out. I'm thinking this one might be a keeper, but it's too cool not to share.

I decided to send this little book out on a journey. Our bookring participants are:

ladilee24
PaulsBooks
Mizuchy
Originalmulli

(I'll be back a little later to link up names with profiles.)

I think most of us know how these things work, but just in case, here's how it goes. First, please make a journal entry when you receive the book. Then take your time and enjoy the book. (Usually I recommend keeping the book for no longer than a month, but if you find that it's taking you a little longer to finish the book, just keep us updated.) When you're nearing the end of the book, please send the next person in line a PM to request shipping information. When you've finished the book, please make another entry to let us know what you thought and to let us know you're ready to mail the book along to the next participant. Finally, send the book out and make release notes.

If it's possible, be kind to the earth by reusing the envelope the book arrived in! Also, please feel free to use the least expensive method of shipping possible.

Happy reading, and Happy Bookcrossing!

I just finished this last night. It's a really fast read, but of course it is YA literature. I enjoyed the book, and Lila's experiences with her "friends." her imagination ran true to that of an eight year old, getting older, figuring things out but holding on to the magic in the world. Not my favorite read of the year, but one I am glad to have read.

I'll get this into the mail to PaulsBooks over the weekend.

I just got the book from the postoffice on Friday, and read it practically over one afternoon. Very nice read, though more suitable for a teenage audience.
PMed the next person in line, will post it as soon as I get an address.

A lovely quick read. I really enjoyed the style of this - the mixture of childlike observation and fantasy. It makes me very sad to think that anyone has to live with this condition. :( But the final scene was beautiful and affirming - demonstrating the resilience of children and their ability to accept things that seem terrible to us.

And the book made it back home. :)

Thanks so much to everyone who participated in this ring. I'm going to give this book a rest on the shelf for a while, and then decide what I'd like to do with it. Meanwhile, if anyone is reading this and thinks they'd like to give this book a chance, feel free to send a PM my way and I'll start up another ring.

Happy Bookcrossing, everyone!
