I loved this book! Don't let the title scare you off :-) This is a funny and heartbreaking story about one woman's struggles to accept herself and to find love.

Journal Entry 4 by pikapolonica on Wednesday, June 18, 2003
Arrived to Stockholm! Thank you, lisaxiii. :) I'll start reading it immediately.

Update (Mon, 23rd June): a very nice heroine! The way how she believed in herself and how she managed to accept herself in the end with all her faults was quite refreshing comparing to other books that deal with the same "topics" (ups, I shouldn't reveal too much :). I liked it better than the other book by Jennifer Weiner, "In her shoes" (where, btw, the characters from this book also briefly feature).

I will send the book to Robbiesmum tomorrow, on Tuesday.

Journal Entry 7 by Robbiesmum from Thirsk, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, July 2, 2003
I really really enjoyed this book! This is definitely chick-lit at its best. Cannie is such a great character whose voice jumps off the page. I felt she was a good friend telling me her story. I won't give the story away, but I'll just point out what I particularly like about the book. Cannie is a larger lady - and not
like Bridget Jones at 9 and a half stone pretending she's big. She is large, and time and again proves she is gorgeous, has a bubbly personality and can attract gorgeous men. She may not always believe she is beautiful but the reader knows. Another point is her dog......I love my dog Robbie, and he plays a big part of my life so I notice dogs in book which appear and then get forgotten. Not Nifkin! The author always remembers where he is, and how he's being cared for. The dog's walks and play contribute to the story, and show the author is a true dog lover. For me, it was a little part of the story which made the character real.
I also loved the humour in the family relationships. Cannie's family have some big issues which are dealt with sensitively. But the humour of siblings and the mum-daughter relationship lit up the book.

A great summer read. I'm so glad I joined this bookray. Hope everyone else enjoys it!

It arrived here today safe and sound! Now I'll have to find some time to read it. Can't wait! :)

Journal Entry 10 by usedtobe on Thursday, July 17, 2003
What a terrific book! :) When I started reading it I found myself comparing Cannie to Bridget Jones but as the story advanced I realized that Cannie is a much more real character and I did care about what happened to her. You'll read about Cannie's problems and accompany her in a journey where she'll have to learn to accept and love herself the way she is. A truly beautiful and funny story!

Journal Entry 11 by Xana from Genève, Genève Switzerland on Wednesday, July 23, 2003
With me, for the moment...

Journal Entry 12 by Xana from Genève, Genève Switzerland on Saturday, August 23, 2003
If it started like a Bridget Jones kind of book, it became much more serious as the story developed.
I was, I must confess, hoping for a little more scenes with the handsome Dr. K, but Cannie's humor and strong personality made it up for it.
Does anyone know if those candy shops-patisseries-cafes really exist in New York? Because if they do, I can't miss the brownie from Le Bus and other such treats...

Book arrived safely today (thanks, Xana!). I'll journal again once I've finished reading it, then it'll be on its way to ligonberry. :)

After struggling through a very busy few weeks, and realizing that there would be no way I could get this book read in a reasonable amount of time - I aquired my own copy, and I'm sending this one on its way, with huge apologies that I've held on to it for so long, and I don't even have anything meaningful to say about it. *sigh*

I am, however, very much looking forward to eventually reading it. For anyone interested, the author has a wonderful web-site: in particular, check out her blog (online diary). She's intelligent, funny, and often downright brilliant: http://www.jenniferweiner.com/

Journal Entry 17 by JollyL from North Vancouver, British Columbia Canada on Wednesday, October 8, 2003
I really enjoyed this! Thank you, lisaxiii, for introducing me to this author. I really enjoyed the humor, and while it was definately escapist, I liked how I could relate to Cannie's feelings about men and about her weight. Great book.
Contacting Ligonberry for address! Thanks!

Still no reply from Ligonberry - will give it the weekend, since it is a popular weekend to travel (Canadian Thanksgiving...) then I will contact Lisaxiii for advice...

Journal Entry 20 by ligonberry from Kitchener, Ontario Canada on Monday, October 27, 2003
Yay!!! I gota pretty pink book in the mail. Thank you, JollyL, for your patience! (Yes, I was away for Thanksgiving). I am looking forward to digging into this. I was in Stockholm three summers ago---my mom is from Sweden, and my husband is from Germany so this book has travelled to (and will continue to travel to...) some especially lovely places, in my humble opinon.

Journal Entry 21 by ligonberry from Kitchener, Ontario Canada on Saturday, November 8, 2003
Fabulous little novel---a very quick read and thoughtful, in spite of the fun CHickLit tone. I haven't heard from DRBrown for an address, but will PM again. Asking for advice from Lisaxiii!

Journal Entry 22 by ligonberry from Kitchener, Ontario Canada on Sunday, November 9, 2003
The novel is on it's way to Dr Brown.

According to Jennifer Weiner's blog, script development is in progress for an HBO show! They have a writer from Sex and the City heading up the effort---Cannie WILL NOT be played by a skinny actress who has gained 5 pounds to become 'overweight' for the role. She will be a wedding photographer, since HBO already has a jaded journalist with a complicated love life on air.

I agree with the other journalers, this is much more than Bridget Jones, with equally funny, but more honest, realistic characters and plotline. It's been a long time since I stayed up well past midnight to finish a book --- Cannie is refreshing in her journey to a better self-image (which you'll be happy to note is not reliant upon weight loss, a romance or even a rich 'fairy godmother'). Weiner's story of a struggling writer has also inspired me to write more myself; Cannie writes with passion and focus.

Enjoy!

Journal Entry 23 by DrBrown from Sierra Madre, California USA on Wednesday, December 10, 2003
I totally forgot to register this when it arrived... sorry! I started to read and enjoyed the author's tone (it's flippant, funny, and deadpan, which is my style), but I got bored with the story three-quarters of the way through -- but now that I'm checking out other people's comments I'm thinking that maybe the ending isn't as predictable as I'm thinking. I'm going to finish this after all and see what happens.

Journal Entry 24 by DrBrown from Sierra Madre, California USA on Thursday, December 11, 2003
I did finish it, and was happy to find out that things worked out but in a more realistic way. The 'dumb plot developments' that I feared never materialized, and so I commend Jennifer Weiner for that. This will go out to hulamonkey this weekend!

Journal Entry 25 by hulamonkey from Newark, Ohio USA on Thursday, January 1, 2004
Happy New Year!

I just read the entries posted for this book and am not sure what to expect.

Anyway, it was delivered yesterday and I'm all set to start reading now!

Journal Entry 26 by hulamonkey from Newark, Ohio USA on Wednesday, January 7, 2004
I really enjoyed this book. It is definitely one of the best chick-lit books that I have read.

I think it would be cool to see it as movie even though I usually end up disappointed when this happens and my husband gets sick of hearing me repeat they totally killed the book! We don't get HBO so I guess I'm out of luck with the show if it happens. Oh well, at least I got to enjoy the book and maybe it's best to leave Cannie as she is in the book and in my imagination.

Journal Entry 27 by lisaxiii from Pleasanton, California USA on Saturday, March 27, 2004
It appears that this book has stalled somewhere after hulamonkey mailed it out. I have decided to contribute another copy of this book and try to continue the bookring. The new journal entries can be found at:

I found this one at the bottom of my shelf and realized I had not journaled it. It was part of a Bookray, but I stalled the Bookray unintentionally. It is now available since the Bookray completed with another copy. Thanks Lisaxiii for a great read!

Received from have2smile from bookrelay.com.

I loved this book! It's so refreshing to read books that have a larger size woman as the main character. It's important to show that a larger woman can find love and happiness without suffering through weight loss. I can't wait to see the movie and who plays Cannie!

Offered on bookrelay.

Sending to GraceTX in a BookRelay

Enjoy!

Journal Entry 32 by GraceTX from Plano, Texas USA on Sunday, October 24, 2004
As I getting ready to make comments about this book, I suddenly realized that I never even "caught" this book. Sorry! Thanks for sending the book. As soon as I received it a couple of weeks ago, I read it straight away.

I quite enjoyed the book. Cannie was a likeable character and I could relate to her not quite knowing what to do with herself. I know the story was left open to possibly have a sequel, but I'm hoping that there isn't one. I like stories where I can fill in what I think happened.
