The Godfather is on the list of 1001 books to read before you die.

It is a crime novel written by American author Mario Puzo, originally published in 1969. It details the story of a fictitious Sicilian Mafia family based in New York City (and Long Beach, NY) and headed by Don Vito Corleone, who became synonymous with the Italian Mafia. The novel covers the years 1945 to 1955, and also provides the back story of Vito Corleone from early childhood to adulthood.

The book introduced Italian criminal terms like consigliere, caporegime, Cosa Nostra, and omertà to an English-speaking audience.

It formed the basis for a 1972 film of the same name. Two film sequels, including new contributions by Puzo himself, were made in 1974 and 1990. The first and second films are widely considered to be two of the greatest films of all time.

I absolutely loved this book and also had trouble putting it down. It had me in suspense all the way as I've never seen the film but I may watch it now. I loved the characters of Michael and the Godfather himself, they bith just seemed so just and honourable and nothing like I imagined.

A great book that I had reservations about picking up but I am so pleased that I did. Thanks bookowl1000 for sharing. I have PM'ed whateverman for their address and hope to get it posted off soon xx

I've watched the films before reading this book and they have been watched many times over. This made me think that it would take me awhile to read due to the fact i knew what was going to happen next. But it was not the case! I couldn't put this book down.

There are a few differences between the book and films but not many. It was enjoyable to find out more about Johnny Fontane who only had a bit part in the film.

Very very good and i think its the first time that i'm able to say that both the book and films are in my top ten lists!.

I've messaged the next person and will post asap!

Brilliant! I loved this book and i even watched The Godfather Part 1 after reading it. The story has not aged and it was an easy to read page turner which i got through in only a few days. Glad I read this book - i saw that my Dad has a copy of Omerta on his bookshelf so i might have to steal that from him next time i visit!

This book is now ready to travel on to Shakeyerbooty once i've got their address.

Returned from a weekend away to find this waiting for me, which was a lovely little treat indeed. I'm a big fan of the film (and Al Pacino!) so really looking forward to reading this. Just need to finish my current read and then I will make a start on this.

Journal Entry 18 by shakeyerbooty on Tuesday, March 30, 2010
Amazing! I loved this and struggled to put it down. Great to get more background and information about the characters than you get in the film. Great read. Thanks to bookowl1000 for starting the ray and to shovelmonkey1 for sending it my way.

I received this this morning, which is *very* fast for second class post, I am impressed! :) Thank you very much. I am reading The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs, and as soon as I've finished that I'll get straight on to The Godfather. (My bookshelf has a Now Reading thingy from GoodReads, so you can use that to click through and find out how far through I am, if you like.)

Thanks again!

Started reading this yesterday. :)

15th April 2010
I finished this in the early hours of this morning, and I have mixed feelings. In many ways it was such a cold book that I don't know if I can say I enjoyed it, but I found it fascinating and loved following the characters and their choices. The ending was utterly perfect! I didn't like how the characters go on about respect and then think nothing of a man beating his wife, though.

I've PMed DianaCosta, who's next in the ring, but check out her bookshelf. No books caught or registered, and only one forum post ever. Should this just come straight home? (ETA: Oh, it's a bookring, so if she doesn't reply I get to pick what to do with it. Cool!)
