Given to me by my friend Megan quite a while ago - finally got around to reading it and loved it. Beautifully written story of Liesel Meminger in nazi Germany from 1939. Liesel and her younger brother are taken to Munich by their mother, to live with a foster family. The father having been taken away previously. The boy dies and Liesel picks up a grave digging handbook by his graveside. This is the beginning of her "stolen" books and love of reading/words. Great characters and relationships. Really worth reading.

Glad you enjoyed this book Sharon, I loved it too when I read it and have given away a few copies in past years. I might keep this one on my bookshelf for a while with a view to re-reading it at some stage.
Here is my review from when I first read it.
"What a heartwrenching story, and so beautifully written. The story is about death; but more than that it is about friendship and love and the human spirit.
The story is about the Second World War on a micro level - seen through the eyes of "Death" and a young German girl called Liesel living in a poor Munich suburb. Through Leisel, we learn about the compassion and dignity of her foster "Papa", the rough cameraderie between her and the "saukerl" boy next door called Rudy and the dignity of the young Jewish man Max who was hidden in Liesel's family basement despite the dangers.
I sobbed my way through the last twenty or so pages - always a sign of a good book for me".
