From the back of the book:
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down explores the clash between a small county hospital in California and a refugee family from Laos over the care of Lia Lee, a Hmong child diagnosed with severe epilepsy. Lia's parents and her doctors both wanted what was best for Lia, but the lack of understanding between them led to tragedy.

Picked up from the bookshelf at the Salvation Army Guesthouse in Reykjavik, Iceland.

I first heard about this book when I was studying medical anthropology a few years ago. It is a good introduction to some of the problems and issues of cross-cultural health care, as seen through the case of one particular family. It is also an introduction to the history and culture of the Hmong, which I didn't know much about previously.
