I've always loved the title of this book, "Who Do You Think You Are?" When I was growing up it was a common put down if you got too uppity, though it might have included an "Anyway?" on the end of it. It strikes me as a particularly common Canadian utterance of the time. Canadians of that day tended to be rather fiercely modest, and anyone who didn't fit that mold was regarded with derision, suspicion and sometimes envy. I think that has changed somewhat as Canada has changed in the passing decades.

Canada in the 60's and 70's when Alice Munro was establishing herself as a major writer, was also in the midst of an identity crisis. We didn't seem to have one, or one that we liked anyway, and "Who Do You Think You Are?" fit with that perennial question as well. Artists like Munro helped establish the identity that we have since established, although on occasion I see magazine articles wondering whether there is a Canadian identity. However, younger Canadians don't seem too worried about it, thank heavens.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Who better than Alice Munro, a great Canadian writer, to have the "honor" of being the author of my 200th official release in the wild.

Planning to leave it up at City Square, probably on one of the benches at the east end of the mall.
