I'm ashamed to say I've never read this book. Beachglass graciously offered it to me. Thanks beachglass! Nice to see you again.
Update November 25, 2003: finished the book. Great little book, well worth reading. I wonder why I waited so long! This is a nice sized little book, perfect for going in a suitcase to the other side of the world, to find a new home.

Well... I caught this book at the Roman meet up...
it will take a long time to read it, my English is not excellent...

Well... I really liked the book: the characters are very well "built", except the old Mary Rommely maybe (too much aware to be an old illitterate woman of the early '900 years...) Francie's aunt Sissy and John Nolan seem to live a real life... Great!?
The only two faults of this novel are (IMO) the usual stereotypes about Italian immigrants and the rethorical sound of the sentences about America and its greatness...

I gave this book to Newk, last night. He will bring it to Australia!
it has arrived in australia. Phew. Long flights. Thanks Miss-piggott. I am unsure if I will read this or pass on.
This book has had a long rest getting over its jet lag and I'll take it away with me to the beach next week (with ten or twenty others) and see if I can get to it.
AND A GREAT BIG HELLO AND WAVE AND MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL.

As is obvious I have had this book tooooo long so have started digging in. About half way through. I have slowed down a bit as I am finding a bit hard going. So in between pages I have read a couple of ring/ray books.
I am to finish sometime before the Australian Bookcrossing Convention which is in Adelaide this year.
I should be able to find a new reader there.
Thanks again all and a special hello to Miss-piggott, whose English was certainly better than my Italian.
Bet things are happy in Roma tonight? (added later to explain that note: Italy had just won the world cup)

It has taken a long time but I have finished. I got held up in the middle a tiny bit as it ground on and on about the poverty...just as it came to the bit where Francie's teacher tells her off for the very same thing!
Great insight into the times and an interesting look at the language and how some parts of it are just the same and some have changed a lot.
Lovely family dynamics. I really enjoyed the relationship between Francie and her brother. Overall a great read, beautifully written and I can see why it is a "classic". And sorry to have taken so long.
With a **tiny** bit of luck it will return to a holder in the land of the free in the next day or two! It has made it around the world!

Well, I spent two weeks in the state of Hawaii, admittedly mostly on the "wrong" islands, but couldn't manage a meet with a resident bookcrosser, so this book continued its journey around the world back to the newk house.
Now in the mail back to Hawaii! Posted today, Prospect PO

Bless you Newk! I always "meant" to read this book and somehow never gotten around to it. Mahalo for sending it along. I'll dig in soon!
This poor little book has been in my possession for seven months and I do apologize to all of those holding their breath to see where it will go next. I enjoyed the read, though I think I was expecting more from a book that is praised so highly. Perhaps if I had read it in high school like the rest of the world I'd have been more enthralled. It's poignant and painful and a well-told tale, but I kept expecting jut a little something more to happen. Maybe that's my own conditioning, expecting action and high drama at every turn of the page.
I'll pass this on at TOC and see where it lands.

This book landed with me long long ago! It wasn't until I was ready to pass it along to a new reader that I discovered that it had never been journaled. Now I'll hide my head as I realize how long it sat in a box, waiting to be passed along.
Luckily it is ready for the next portion of its journey. Happy travels, little book!

I've just spent a delightful two days with allysther but first we attended a TOC Bookcossing luncheon with other Honolulu bookcrossers. It was suggested that I should take this precious book with me to Washington for BCin BC convention.
Such a good book that I first read back in 2005 in my beginning bookcrossing days. Checked my last time journal entry but couldn't cut and paste that into here. I can definitely confirm that I loved the book then and from the few dips into this copy I can sure see why.

I have sent this book with my daughter who is going to New York tomorrow. She will set it free at a tree in Brooklyn. Thanks, Newk, for suggesting such an excellent themed release!
This book didn't quite get to a tree in Brooklyn but I'm sure I can find a tree in Queenstown for it to continue it's travels.
