Murder is Easy
Luke had chosen this particular first-class carriage because it contained only a single occupant. He could not have guessed that the old lady would turn out to be such a compulsive and imaginative talker. As a newly-retired police officer he was mildly amused by Miss Pinkerton's description of her mission: to go to Scotland Yard (the "Fountainhead" she had called it) to lay information about a series of murders. And she knew who would be the next victim: Doctor Humbleby; and she knew who the murderer was. It seemed a highly unlikely story - until Doctor Humbleby's obituary unexpectedly appeared in the Press.

Dead Man's Folly
The idea was that it should be a game: the game of "Murder", with Hercule Poirot giving the prizes to successful entrants. But Mrs. Oliver was worried because too many suggestions were being made to "improve" the game - minor improvements, but possibly suggesting that someone intended to adapt the Murder game for some special reason. For what purpose, how, and by whom, were three questions that Poirot had to solve. The first was soon answered, dramatically enough, with a real murder; and the victim, so far as was known, had not an enemy in the world...
