It took many months to work my way through this anthology of women's memoirs from Britain, Africa, Asia, and the United States, but I finally have read every one of their extraordinary stories. The ones I found most interesting were from Vera Brittain, who told of her experiences as a nurse, sister, friend, and daughter during World War I; Isak Dineson, whose story was already familiar to me from the movie "Out of Africa"; all the stories of South Africa's struggle for equality and an end to apartheid, as told by Mary Benson, Ruth First, and Emma Mashinini; and America's struggle for equality and an end to segregation, as told by Gloria Wade-Gayles. Such strong women, living their lives, standing up for what they believe in, making the world a better place—truly inspiring.
I'll be offering this to a book-loving friend in Chicago the next time I see her.
