Synopsis: Quoyle is a hapless, hopeless hack journalist in New York. When his no-good wife is killed in a spectacular road accident, Quoyle heads for the land of his forefathers- the remotest corner of far-flung Newfoundland. With his delinquent daughters, Bunny and Sunshine in tow, Quoyle finds himself a part of an unfolding, exhilarating Atlantic drama. An irresistible comedy of human life and possibility."

One of the reviews on the back cover of this book states: "To read The Shipping News is to yearn to be sitting in The Flying Squid Lunchstop, eating seal fin curry, watching the icebergs clink together in the bay." In fact it had the opposite affect on me! I've always wanted to visit Newfoundland but this book describes a distinctly unappealing place - a bleak subsistence lifestyle in continuous terrible weather!!

That doesn't mean I didn't like the book - just didn't like the place it describes! The characters are varied, fascinating, multi-dimensional and wonderfully interconnected. I was dipping in and out of the book several months after my first reading when I started to notice the delicious style of writing, so I started again at the beginning. From the first paragraph, the clipped, single-clause-sentence, choppy feel made me keep going.

Also a great treatise on attitudes to love, life & death. A very worthwhile read.

I really liked this story! I can definitely recommend it. Fishing, the sea, boats, rocks, a weird newspaper, leather, and lots of stories within the story.

Who wants to read it now? The bookray is officially finished, but maybe we can keep it going a little longer?

This book has been on my bookshelf for quite a while now and I often looked at it again even after I had read it, because I really enjoyed it. It introduced me to Annie Proulx's writing, of which I have read some more since.
This one is now travelling to 1001-libary member AyeshaRaees in Pakistan! I really hope it reaches her quite safely.

Read it through the year, this book needed some attention that I lacked. But the last few pages made up for the parts in which I just wished that the book would be over. I liked the thought process behind it and the storyline. By the end, despite how long it took me to read this book, I felt at loss of words to describe the whole experience. It's probably one of those books that's worth a read but one needs a certain stamina to go through the journey with.
