Another Maeve Binchy winner. Don't let the fact that it was an "Oprah" choice prejudice you. It's not great and serious literature, but it's well-crafted contemporary fiction, especially for women readers. Enjoy!

If you haven't read Angela's Ashes (by Frank McCourt, I believe), you're missing out on a truly wonderful though often painful Irish story. Angela's Ashes is actually "creative non-fiction," unlike Tara Road.

I picked up this book from a paper bag of donated books outside the Bala Cynwyd library in SE Pennsylvania. It was closed for some reason, and a man was just dropping off books for donation--which you're not supposed to just leave outside the building! I was returning books about France (from our recent trip to Nice), so after I properly inserted them into the drop box, I helped myself to two Maeve Binchy books!

Wow. This was the most stupefyingly boring read ever. It was very nice, and very woman-oriented, but ultimately, it's just about a small handful of women and their long, drawn out, uneventful lives. I live a more exciting life than these people and I'm only 21. I finished the story out of sheer drudging perserverance, since there was really no plot or character derived reason for me to want to know what happened next. They were all mildly interesting people doing mildly normal things, day after day, year in and year out. Unless you really want a plain, long, boring vacation from your overly exciting life, skip it.
