Character development is not one of Goodkind's strong points. It seems that in every novels in the Sword of Truth series, Richard and Kahlan are separated by some devious means, and then are reunited in an all-too-cliche overly-tender ending. Frankly, I am rather sick of it. There isn't really any real story. They could've defeated Jagang long ago, but it seems that throwing in boring "plot twists" serves only to extend the length of time it takes to get to the end.

I loved the first few books, but this one was a big dissappointment.

excellent!!!
finally something is moving just the right way! first, the writing is much better than in any of the previous. then, richard and kahlan break their (nice, but overwhelming, sometimes)i-need-you-to-tell-me-you-love-me relationship.
after he simply quits fighting the war with the order, dissapointed by the people who don't really appreciate freedom , and have almost killed kahlan, richard takes her to the woods he knows best, away from all the troubles they faced. but trouble finds them anyway.
the strange nicci, a sister of the dark desperate to find a reason for her life, forces richard away from kahlan, under threat of his wife's death. he is to become her prisoner for the rest of her life, or until she is pleased with finding a justification for living. as he follows nicci into the old world to be a slave for the poor of altur'rang (the city at the heart of the jagang's empire) he understands that all hope of rejoining kahlan is lost...and yet he won't despair.
after facing endlessly in battle the hordes she cannot possibly defeat, kahlan is forced to accept richard's attitude as to the outcome of the war...but she will not easily accept him to be a slave of the order for her sake, and finally makes a furious attempt to save him, even if that means her death.
as i said, this is the best one yet (and i almost became convinced that in order to help the desperately poor, you mustn't ever give them charity, or they'll become used to it and lose their will to fight for an improvement of their life, by themselves...as , unfortunately, this truth is daily proven in romania.while i still maintain there are some cases for exception, i find this must be the rule if we are to be the best we can be.)
i'd only wish i could carve or have some real artistic talent, (as i have not :-)), but this is life and must be dealt with as it is.
the book is great, don't miss it!
thanks, roxy!
