I found this a difficult book to read. There is not much known about Ann Shakespeare (Hathaway) so Germaine Greer attempts to build a life for her using contemporary records of social conditions of the time with reference to Shakespeare's plays. It makes for a book that is very academic while being interesting in parts because it gives a picture of how people of the middle class lived during the Tudor period.
