This has so polarised opinion that I felt obliged to read it. Because older readers seem inclined to loathe the book, I expected inept trite trash. Happily, however, I enjoyed the read. I can see why adolescent girls are so bedazzled by the romance of an awkward awkward girl falling in love with a beautiful vampire boy. The story oozes repressed sexuality and implicit sex. For myself, I liked the protagonists: their self-aware irony, Bella's fatalism, Edward's torment. It is not subtle but it treats an often brutal genre with warmth. Despite this, I feel no urge to reread the story and I will not seek out its sequels because I feel that I derived all its value on the first read.
