I took this out of the Audio Bookbox. This is my mother's favorite book, but I didn't like it very much when I read it in high school. I found the characters very difficult to like. It paints a great portrait of the time and place... but the characters and lifestyle don't appeal to me. Reading about an unfulfilling world just isn't my thing.

BUT this is a classic and an unabridged one at that. I hope the next reader enjoys it!

Received this today along with two other audiobooks!
Thank you, KateKintail.
I meant to read this for ages, but never got around, only watched the movie - so this is just brilliant!

Journal Entry 6 by wingApoloniaXwing from Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin Germany on Tuesday, March 16, 2010
Just finished listening to this. In a way it’s just a brutal pathetic love story, full of illusions. But there is more to it, it’s a great mirror of the era, the Jazz Age, the decadent lifestyle of the rich in the 20s, the American dream – all seen through the watchful eyes of an outsider. It’s full of symbolism. I love the smooth poetic writing – and also the way it was fluently read, it made me easily picture the plot.
(ETA: And "Reading Lolita in Tehran" (which is not just about Nabokov, but also about Fitzgerald, James and Austen) helped to give me a deeper understanding of the novel.)

Takes me a bit longer to listen to audios on cassette these days as I only have a player in the kitchen

I had heard of this book in the past but never read it as I though it wouldn't appeal to me. However I was surprised especially at the end that I really did want to know what was happening.

Not really sure what I think about this book. I feel I should love it because everyone else does but there were parts where I was bored!
