Received from a paperbackswap.com member in Texas, just in time for the worldwide readalong in August.
I finished reading this a couple of days ago, but I couldn't make a journal entry right away because I was still thinking, thinking, thinking. I can't say that I'm completely done thinking about the book, but my thoughts are, at least, in some sort of order now.
It took a long time for me to read this book. I kept picking it up and putting it down, allowing real life to get in the way of finishing it. Part of the reason, I think, was because of the threat of the deep messages I would encounter in its pages. In the first 45 pages alone, there were interesting thoughts put forth about zoos and religions and Pi's belief in the need for both because freedom doesn't mean you have no boundaries; it means you are safe in the life you have claimed for yourself. Eventually, though, I read just to read and enjoy, not to analyze. I believed Pi's story, and knowing everything about the story now that I'm at the end of it, I, like the officials from the Japanese Ministry of Transport, believe the tiger is the better story.
